According to Nikkei News today (19), TSMC has been eyeing IBM's big list of server chips, hoping to get rid of the shackles of Apple and smartphones.

With sales of the iPhone slowing down, TSMC is actively looking for new revenue drivers, thereby reducing its dependence on smartphone chips. According to supply chain sources, IBM will look for new server chips from TSMC to be used in the next generation of mainframes.

IBM, as a global server manufacturer, had a global market share of data center servers last year, reaching 8.3%. Although IBM servers are less shipped, prices are far more expensive than their peers. IBM mainframes, for example, cost $300,000 to $2 million; similar products from HP or Dell, which use Intel chips, cost only about $7,000.

Intel supplies 96% of the servers'chips in the global data center, and IBM is a special case. Instead of using Intel's chips, it develops its own chips, which were previously manufactured by grid cores. But with the lattice core announcing this year to abandon the development of 7Nm technology, IBM needs to be smart in order to pursue higher performance server chips.

At present, only Samsung and TSMC have 7-nm technology in the market. TSMC has X86 processors and 16-nanometer APU processors for AMD. This year, we also took AMD's CPU order, which is more abundant than Samsung in high-performance CPU technology.

In addition to AMD and IBM, ARM is also working with TSMC to develop data center chips. All parties work with TSMC to compete with Intel's server chips. In the future, the market share of the server chips on which Intel depends may gradually lose. (proofreading /Aki)
